Mrs. Susens’ Classroom NewsWeek of December 1, 2008

Thank you to everyone who was able to visit our Native Americans open house celebration!  I’m sure you were as impressed as I was by the enthusiasm shown by all of the students as they shared their new knowledge with you.  In addition to families, we had several classes tour our display, and it was wonderful to see upper classmen learning from first graders!

For those who were unable to attend, the cultural artifacts were:
-wampum: beads used for trade by NA of the NE Woodlands
-gorget: ceremonial necklace worn by NA of the SE Woodlands
-symbol story on “buffalo leather:” writing typical of NA of the plains
-pottery: typical of NA of SW desert
-whale rattle: used in ceremonial dances by NA of  NW
-inukshuk: stone statue of a man used by NA of the Far North to find mark way home

I am happy to report that everyone has had at least one poem entered in the national young poet’s contest sponsored by Creative Communication (www.poeticpower.com).  Each winning poem will be published in an anthology.  Winners will be notified sometime in January.  I submitted the poems using the school’s address so that I can proof the winning poems before sending the notification letters home to you.  You will need to sign the letter which gives Creative Communication permission to publish your child’s poem.  You will have the option of purchasing the anthology, but this is not necessary—even if your child’s poem is one of the winners.  The poems were really good, and I expect quite a few will be selected for publication!

I’d like to submit all of the poems to the St. Petersburg Times for their XPressions student page.  The SPT requires parental permission.  Rather than send home permission slips, I will send in all of the poems unless I hear from you that you do not want me to do so.  Poems that are published will include the student’s name, grade, and school.

During the week before Thanksgiving, everyone in the class wrote a letter to Santa for a Macy’s fundraiser.  For each letter received, Macy’s is donating $1.00 to the Make a Wish Foundation.  By writing twenty-three letters, our class raised $23.00 for Make a Wish (and let Santa know about all their Christmas wishes).  The class was thrilled to help others in such an easy way!

Thank You

Thank you to Dr. Golden for speaking to us during the Great American Teach In and for bringing each student a bag of dental goodies.

Thank you to Mrs. Mancuso for making an inukshuk for each student, and for stepping forward to be our new class mom.  We are thrilled to have you join us! Thank you to Mrs. Irwin for continued classroom and library help.

Thank you to Mrs. Schorr for suggesting and taking charge of our Christmas cards for military personnel project.  We had a wonderful time writing the cards and we know that they will bring first grade blessings to the recipients.

We love you.  We bless you.  We thank God for all of you!

Scholastic Orders

The final Scholastic order before Christmas is due Wednesday, December 3rd.  If you would like me to place a secret order, just enclose a note with the order and I will notify you by email or phone when the order arrives.

Spelling words

Please help your child learn these spelling words.  The test will be Friday, December 5th: far, farm, arm, art, park, part, chin, such, fly, again, know, loud, put, say, feel

Robust Vocabulary

This week we return to our regular routine.  Our robust vocabulary words are:  -approach: to move near to something-energetic: full of energy-pace: how fast you are moving-blunder: to make a bad or silly mistake-reassure: to tell someone that everything will be all right-excel: to be very good at something

Classroom Needs

-cardboard tubes from Christmas wrapping paper
-save a shoebox for a spring project
-glue sticks (We are almost out!)

Field Trips

We have two field trips this month.  The first is this Wednesday, December 3rd, to CCC for their Christmas program.  Please be sure your child has returned his/her permission slip with the bus fee ($2.00).  If you need a new permission slip, please let me know and I will send one home.

This Week in Class

Language Arts: This week we’ll begin the third volume of our reading series.  We will be reading realistic fiction stories.  Our focus skill will be author’s purpose/point of view.  In phonics, we’ll be looking at r-controlled /a/.  We will continue writing stories for our Student Treasures book.  We will also complete our Radiant Peace project.

Math: We’ll review geometry, then move on to congruency (same size-same shape), symmetry, and slides, flips, and turns.
Science: We’ll begin a short unit on natural resources and conservation. S
ocial Studies: We’ll begin our look at how different countries in the world celebrate Christmas.
